Chalazion

What is chalazion?

Chalazion is an inflammation which appears on the eyelid, usually with coexisting blepharitis. It is located on the glands that exist on the lip of the eyelids, which are called Meibomian glands. Chalazion is caused by Meibomian gland obstruction. The eyelid gets swollen, irritated, red and when someone touches it feels like there is a small sized bulge.

Chalazion symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Redness
  • Eyelid edema

Chalazion treatment:

  • Artificial tears: for the irritation of the eyes
  • Hot compresses: to reduce inflammation
  • Antibiotics with cortisone (ointments with antibiotics and cortisone)
  • Surgical procedure: if after the retreat of the inflammation the eyelid is still swollen
  • With a cortisone injection topically
